Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the J-1 visa and Talent Navigator.

What is Talent Navigator?
Talent Navigator is a public-benefit screening tool for J-1 host companies and candidates. It helps you compare categories, refine the role and candidate facts, and create a sponsor-ready packet when you are ready to move forward.
Can companies of any size host J-1 exchange visitors?
Yes. You do not need to be a university or large institution to host J-1 exchange visitors. State Department guidelines allow a wide range of US organizations — from private companies to established R&D labs and nonprofits — to participate depending on the J-1 category. Talent Navigator helps you identify which category fits your organization and the role.
What is Cultural Vistas?
Cultural Vistas is the featured launch sponsor for Talent Navigator handoffs. It is a US Department of State-designated J-1 sponsor, but it is not the same thing as Talent Navigator: the tool prepares and explains the packet; the sponsor reviews documentation and makes the final eligibility determination.
What J-1 categories does Talent Navigator evaluate?
Talent Navigator evaluates five J-1 program categories: Intern (up to 12 months), Trainee (up to 18 months), Research Scholar (up to 5 years), Short-Term Scholar (up to 6 months), and Specialist (up to 12 months). It asks a few questions about your organization and the role, then recommends the category that fits best so you do not have to figure it out on your own.
Is the eligibility assessment legally binding?
No. The AI-powered eligibility assessment is a screening tool only. It provides guidance based on program requirements but does not constitute legal advice. Final eligibility determination is made by the selected sponsor, often in consultation with immigration professionals.
What does the process look like after I get my eligibility result?
Once Talent Navigator confirms a likely fit, you can consent to send your packet to a sponsor. Today the featured sponsor destination is Cultural Vistas. From there, both the company and the individual complete the sponsor’s application process. The sponsor reviews the documentation, issues the DS-2019 form when approved, and supports both parties throughout the program.
What if I get a YELLOW or RED eligibility signal?
A YELLOW signal means there are potential concerns that may need clarification. You can update your profile and retake the assessment. A RED signal indicates a hard eligibility barrier (e.g., 24-month bar). You'll receive specific guidance on what the barrier is and when you might become eligible.
Is my data secure?
We take data security seriously. All data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Immigration-related personal information is handled in compliance with applicable data protection regulations. A sponsor receives your packet only after you consent to the handoff.
